Debian 4.0 is no longer getting security patches.  I would worry that
someone is logging and and trying to gain root.  If possible, take it off
the net and back it up using a boot-CD.

I've been dealing with old Debian and Ubuntu servers lately.  If you handle
payment-cards, it's no longer acceptable to leave them on your network.
