For anyone who has upgraded to or past samba-3.2.0, Win9x and WinME clients stopped working. The reason they stopped working is that newer versions of Samba turn lanman authentication and plaintext authentication off by default. Three lines added to smb.conf and redoing the passwords fixes the problem, but I wish a better solution was offered. Win9x and WinMe are capable of accepting third party networking software. Why not implement NT style passwords on these older versions of Windows that some people are stuck with for whatever reason? To what degree is support of lanman style passwords needed for Win9x and WinME clients? Do individual Win9x apps expect lanman style passwords, or is this abstracted properly? A free replacement Microsoft style networking stack for Win9x that does NT style passwords and hashing would be great.
