John,

Whenever the connection between you and the merchant/bank is secured
you'll see a small closed padlock icon on the status line of the browser
window. This usually means that the data is passed through the SSL (Secure
Socket Layer) to minimize or eliminate man-in-the-middle attacks. Some sites
show an open padlock. When I see that I call the company and order over the
telephone and tell them their server is not at all secure.

If the data are stolen by someone at the company or bank, all bets are
off.

Many other PLUGgers know much more than do I about this and will both
educate you and correct any inadvertent mis-statements above.

Rich
