In addition to what Daniel said, there is a password file somewhere that theoretically can be edited. I recall once at a Clinic we needed to reset a user's password. If I recall correctly the guru who attempted this was Keith, however, I also recall that we failed.
I know I have seen "lost password" posts on the Ubuntu forums more than once. The forums are accessible by web browser and are searchable: http://ubuntuforums.org/forumdisplay.php?f=327 I would recommend searching the Installation and Upgrades forum.
