The newer versions of X.org autodetect everything so there is no 
xorg.conf (FYI this makes things really screwy when using a KVM switch 
because there is no "state info" available if the switch is set to 
another system at boot time - but that's a different story).  I have 
created several xorg.conf files by various means and had limited 
success.  I think the problem is further exacerbated by having two 
methods of setting resolution - one from nvidia and one from linux. 
Maybe I'll fool around with xrandr . . .
