Tomorrow I will follow your guidelines.

I reinstalled Ubuntu again from the CD (had to turn off modeset in the 
boot parameters) and it took.

I told Ubuntu that the MBR was on sda which is hd0.

When Ubuntu told me to reboot the system, I removed the CD, watched it 
reboot

--->  -->  right into another grub error

This time it couldn't find the UUID (a big long string of alphanumerics) 
then dropped into
grub rescue>

but of course typing "help" and "quit" and "list"  was always met with 
"error"

Obviously the standard Ubuntu installer has only 1 hard disk on their 
system.
