Thanks all for the verification that firefox works with Wells Fargo,
suggesting that I had some weird configuration problem.

I browsed about:config and found this item changed:

   general.useragent.override: Quicktime 7.6.4

I reset it. The string is now blank.

Now the Wells Fargo page works, reporting the expected:

   Your browser is: Firefox 3.6.10

THe next mystery is what set that override, and whether something
is broken now that it is turned off. More about this setting at
http://kb.mozillazine.org/Firefox_:_FAQs_:_About:config_Entries#General.
