My new hard drive is partitioned and formatted and ready for the OS to be
installed. I've not before installed on an external drive; I've always
rebooted and installed on the internal drive. I have an internal optical
drive, and an external one that connects via USB (as does the new hard
drive). Google searches found information on how to install on a USB drive,
but not how to install the complete OS on an external drive. I'll be
installing Slackware-13.0 on it.

I'd appreciate suggestions on how best to proceed.
