I'm not an X expert, but a few questons:
1. Does it work the same with the middle button on a 3-button (or scroll)
   mouse and Emulate3Buttons disabled?
2. Does a commandline clipboard util (e.g. uclip or xsel) show the selected
contents? I.e. is the "copy" operation or the "paste" operation failing?
Similarly, if you use uclip/xsel to copy data, does it paste OK?
3. Can you replicate the behaviour on any other version of the X package,
on another distro, or on a Slackware live CD?
4. Does it matter if GPM is running?
5. Does switching to a text console (Ctrl-Alt-F1) and switching back
   (Alt-F7 or so) change anything?
6. Is GrabDevice enabled or disabled?
7. Does this link have any bearing?

Good luck,
