For nVidia Ubuntu (like most distros) has switched from the old "nv" driver to the "nouveau" driver as their open source driver of choice. When Ubuntu 10.04 was new the nouveau driver still had issues, and I recall reading a lot of complaints about speed. I would see if I could get the latest version of the nouveau driver as my first course of action. If that doesn't help, try the nVidia proprietary driver.
