I'm set up via two gateways to route a lan onto the Internet via a DSL connection. I'm adding Comcast temporarily to get a feel for the service and possibly be able to order a month or so of service in case of DSL outages or need. I want to route through Comcast on demand. To effect this change, I'm thinking of adding a physical nic on each gateway that will connect to the cable modem.
First question, how do I set the default gateway properly? Second question, how do I set the name servers I want, not Comcast's? Do I really need to add another nic or can I alias a second address on an existing nic and use free ports on my DSL connected ethernet switch for the cable modem? I have three open ports on my DSL connected ethernet switch. The other five ports respectively go to my two gateways, my mail server, my DSL modem, and a Netgear FVX 538. The DSL has a static subnet. I assume residential Comcast service uses a modem that dynamically configures the host. Can I change this to be static? If not, what options to I have to work around the Comcast equipment wanting to dynamically configure all connected hosts? I'm trying the phone service out as well, what do I need to know about Comcast's digital phone service? For starters I am going to use an extra laptop for the Comcast, but I want to access Comcast through my network ultimately. I consider Comcast a more costly Internet connection where the preference should be the DSL link unless A that link is down or B a host is specifically set to go through Comcast. Another thought is to add a nic to each gateway, hook the cable modem to the FVX 538, and link from the new nic on each gateway to the FVX 538's internal switch. I think that the FVX 538's dhcp server is turned off right now. At least the dynamic address range should be limited. In this scenario of connecting to the FVX 538, I am treating my DSL gateways as sub gateways. _______________________________________________ PLUG mailing list [email protected] http://lists.pdxlinux.org/mailman/listinfo/plug
