I rarely use the dual layer feature of the DVD drive in my laptop, but
this evening I needed to for the first time in over a year. Regardless
of whether I use K3b or Brasero I get errors and the burn process
fails.

The drive continues to burn regular DVDs and CDs just fine.

Considering that two different packages refuse to burn dual layer DVDs,
either there is a common library they share that is buggy, or there is
a hardware failure. The drive has had a lot of use over the past couple
of years, so I'd like to rule out hardware failure first. Does anyone
have any suggestions for how I can do that?

Oh, it's a Thinkpad T61 with Fedora 14/Gnome, x86_64. The last time I
burned a dual layer DVD I was running Jaunty x86_64.
