David,

I had problems syncing my Treo 700p with jpilot after upgrading from
Slackware-12.2 to -13.1. I added new udev rules for it because it's always
seen by the kernel as /dev/ttyUSB1, but that device doesn't exist until the
Treo is plugged into its cable.

It turns out that there's a more generic, better way. I added my username
to the dialout group and now udev automagically sees the correct device and
allows me to sync the handheld to the desktop. In Slackware udev has taken
completely over from HAL for identifying new hardware and figuring how to
talk to it. Perhaps OpenSuSE is the same.

As to why it broke: udev has undergone major surgery the details of which
I do not know, nor do I care to know and now works quite differently from
before.

Happy holidays,

Rich
