I chased this around when I first got my MiFi and remember it actually 
being in the MiFi.  When it detects power (and data?) it shuts the data 
functionality off.
   Can't remember all the details or even where I found them because I 
never took the plunge.  Besides at the time everything I found indicated 
it, the MiFi, wouldn't work plugged in to a Linux box so I've stuck with 
using it as a wireless access point.
    Though the thing that sticks in my mind it there was some way to 
jumper some of the lines that tricked the MiFi into charging and still 
working as a connectivity device.

Have you checked the Manufacturer's site?  They sometimes have postings 
from users about non-supported usage or modifications.
