My Google searches have not been productive so I ask for guidance here.

Previous portables did not support suspend or hibernate and I never missed
them. The Dell implements them by default and suspend gets in my way when it
shuts the system down in the middle of a long download or disconnects from
the 'Net with an active DHCP lease. I would like to disable both suspend and
hibernate, but be able to turn on either (or both) in the future if I find a
need. I've not yet learned where they are controlled.

Is the control in the system's BIOS? In the OS (and distribution
specific)? In the window/desktop manager? Or, some place else?
