nathan, I thought dmesg was updated when the system booted. Looking at its output, I see that it also reports when new hardware is attached, such as the backup drive (which needed to be checked after mounting 102 times) and the PDA/phone when I sync it to jpilot. The system is only rebooted when I do a distribution upgrade (new kernel version) or I've replace failed hardware. Nothing there about logging in to the system as a user.
