The situation seems to have resolved itself with a couple of rounds of the recent upgrades from Ubuntu. I believe it was a Java thing - something was waiting for a procedure using a Java 'class' to come up with an output but if it hung then the browser would not complete loading of the page.
So I spent the last couple weeks in 1997-land, texts with choice of font size and colors only. But it seems than much has been restored so far.
