The situation seems to have resolved itself with a couple of rounds of
the recent upgrades from Ubuntu.
I believe it was a Java thing - something was waiting for a procedure
using a Java 'class' to come up with an output but if it hung then the
browser would not complete loading of the page.

So I spent the last couple weeks in 1997-land, texts with choice of font
size and colors only.

But it seems than much has been restored so far.

Ticket 'closed.'
