Agreed, my mentor pointed me in the direction of gentoo in late 2000, he told me to do a stage 3 but compile my own kernel. When stuck, he would refer me to the handbook. When I complained enough, he would tell me to port forward Ssh(22) and scuttle my whole setup or other mischief.
It took me 3 weeks to get a working kernel, only able to surf the net via links/lynx during that time was an experience(live cd).
