As an implementation consultant you create a LOT of doc. At some point
you need to get it from point A to point B. Invariably one of those
points is across a corporate firewall. As enterprise software has become
more complex, the supporting doc has grown. I currently have a 60MB doc
that goes through the step by step of installing automation software
across 6 servers. It contains a LOT of screen shots, thus big file size.

There is a rule that says you can't plug in USB devices that don't have
encryption software, which by the way only works on Windows. There isn't
a rule that says you can't move doc from your linux laptop to the
Corporate sharepoint. The former is done for security, the latter is an
unintended side effect.

File size limitations on email aren't security prevention measures. They
are cost of storage issues. I understand the need to cut down on the
general rabble emailing 100MB files around, but at some point you need
to be able to get large amounts of information from point A to point B
without having to open a help desk ticket, get 6 approvals, wait four
weeks for a firewall port to be opened, all on a three week contract.
Diminishing returns on efficiency mean diminishing returns on productivity.

WebDAV is a good suggestion, but at the end of the day, Bank of America
or JPMC need the doc to reside on their internal sharepoint, be in
doc/docx format, and all the other trappings that come with working in
corporate environments. I love to evangelize F/OSS, but I don't sell you
the bridge, I just build it.

For those facing the same issue, I got around the problem with Ubuntu
One. 5 GB file size limit, thank you very much Canonical.
