There appears to have been a bug with fglrx and compiz that caused behavior similar to what you're describing: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/fglrx-installer/+bug/748137 If you're not sure what video driver you're using, check if you have an ATI video card and then look through your Xorg log file: $> lspci | grep VGA $> less /var/log/Xorg.0.log Let us know what you find.
