I've pretty well decided that the best process for me to upgrade my
server/workstation from Slackware-13.1/32-bit to -13.37/64-bit is to install
the latter on a new drive connected externally (along with the compat32
libraries), then copy over those 32-bit applications that I need. This
prevents me from losing something by overwriting the one drive.

I have an external USB-connected cd/dvd optical drive, the USB-connected
external hard drive adapter, and the distribution DVD but I don't know if
these can be interconnected so the external drive is the target for the
installation.

Can this be done? If so, how?
