My desktop is dual-boot XP and the latest Ubuntu; each OS has it's own SATA drive. When I try to do a shutdown in either OS it does not completely shutdown. In XP, the nVidia video card powers off, there is no signal to the monitor, but the cold-cathode light is on and the fans are still running. In Ubuntu, the splash screen is showing, with the left three of the five "progress diamonds" in color, but that is as far as it goes. The light is on and the fans are still running. So, I switch off power at the power supply. Later, after switching power back on and pushing the start button, the light/fans come on for a few seconds, everything shuts down for a few seconds, and then the light/fans come back on and a normal boot takes place. It is as though the x86 box has a shutdown checklist and does everything except the last few items. Then, when starting a new session, it does those last few shutdown items from the previous session, shuts down, then initiates a normal boot process. Anybody know what's going on here?
