I have often seen the message "Xlib: Maximum number of clients reached".
This limit applies to all of your windows (not just terminal emulators)
plus some sockets and X11 IPC. Depending on your X version, you might
only be able to open around 250 emulator windows.

Until somewhat recently, MAXCLIENTS=256 was compiled into Xorg, then it
got bumped to 512, and is now finally going to become a setting in the
config file? I often have ~60 terminals, ~70 konquerors, ~80 gvims,
and other assorted windows in my typical taskbar. But it's not just
crazies like me who hit the limit anymore: Apparently firefox and
google-chrome are using multiple "windows" to render sub-parts of a
page (probably to manage tabs too) and each of these count as
a "client".

So malloc calls a timeout and starts rummaging around the free chain,
sorting things out, and merging adjacent small free blocks into larger
blocks. This takes 3 1/2 days.
