Tim,

   My book is probably well out of date. Check reviews on amazon.com.

   Yes, the GIMP is bit-mapped/raster/pixel-based. Last I counted (a while
ago) there were at least 17 vector-based graphics applications for linux. If
you want a GUI then Sketch or Xfig will do a nice job. If you're willing to
put in the time to learn it, PSTricks is outstanding
<http://www.tug.org/PSTricks/main.cgi/>. Look at the examples and you'll see
just what complete control you have over text, lines, etc. And Herbert Voss
is exceptionally helpful. I've used PSTricks to create a scannable form,
plot data, and more.

   There's also gnuplot and graphviz but they're more for data than pretty
pictures of the artistic variety.
