Tim, My book is probably well out of date. Check reviews on amazon.com. > My understanding is that GIMP is a pixel-based program, and that things > like Corel Draw are vector based. Yes, the GIMP is bit-mapped/raster/pixel-based. Last I counted (a while ago) there were at least 17 vector-based graphics applications for linux. If you want a GUI then Sketch or Xfig will do a nice job. If you're willing to put in the time to learn it, PSTricks is outstanding <http://www.tug.org/PSTricks/main.cgi/>. Look at the examples and you'll see just what complete control you have over text, lines, etc. And Herbert Voss is exceptionally helpful. I've used PSTricks to create a scannable form, plot data, and more. There's also gnuplot and graphviz but they're more for data than pretty pictures of the artistic variety.
