Well, I think things are back to normal. I have the WRT54G running as my
router, and have its inward facing IP address set to 192.168.0.1. The
only remaining problem was that my Ubuntu 10.04 desktop could ping the
router but could not connect to the Internet. I don't know which network
tool is not the "correct" one for playing with network connections. I
tried the ones that I could find in System > Administration and System >
Preferences, but they didn't appear to have any effect. I restarted the
machine (that was so Winders like -- shudder) and now I can connect.

Since I finally found the place to change the IP address of the router I
no longer need to worry about changing all the static IP addresses in
the house. However it would be good to find the correct tool to use.
I'll Google that later today.
