i've had good luck with Dells and Ubuntu over three generations of Dell
laptop and 3 yrs worth of regular Ubuntu version upgrades (through
version 10.10, still holding off on the Gnome3/Unity thing). The Intel
onboard video chipset (the cheaper option on many models) has good (i.e.
, non-buggy though a bit slow) vendor-provided FOSS drivers; i've
preferred the Nvidia dedicated video option when my employer would
spring for it. i can't remember what model i have currently, but the
built-in display is 1400x960 or something close to that - a little small
for programming (i have a couple of big monitors on my desk, and use the
standard Dell docking station to connect to those), but good enough when
i'm on the road. Most of my employers have used these as standard
developer laptops - reliability seems pretty good.
