I realize that's probably not the best subject line, but I'm not sure
what would be better. Here's the story:

OS is Ubuntu 10.04.

I have been successfully running a program called transcribe and
controlling it with a program called footpedal. The program transcribe
is a fairly simple sound player that shows the length of a recording in
time and also shows the elapsed time at the cursor location. The program
footpedal has the ability to let me start and stop playback with a USB
connected foot switch.

Over the weekend I played around with Rhythmbox.

This morning, when I loaded transcribe and opened a recording, instead
of hearing the voices I was trying to transcribe I got some (rather bad)
rock music when I stepped on the foot switch. While there was nothing on
the screen to show that Rhythmbox was still running, ps ax | grep
rythmbox showed that it was. I killed it, but now the connection between
footpedal and transcribe is broken.

Short of restarting the machine is there some way to restore that
connection? It's not something I've ever had to initiate on my own.

Thanks.
