After poor experience with a Trip-Lite UPS I switched to APC-Smart units and have been extremely satisfied with them all. The Smart series has a serial port to connect to your server so it can be automatically shut down by the UPS. I found a company that sells refurbished APC units and spent about 60% of the cost of a new APC-Smart 1400 ... with a year's warranty. They refurbish the electronics and put new batteries in. I forget the name because it's been quite a few years, but the ol' APC just keeps on going. I did replace the two batteries about 3 months ago when they finally rolled over and died.
