All the tools and applications I build locally are in /opt. Because top-level directories are owned by root.root I change the mode of /opt to 777 so I can download files to it, move files to it, etc.
For some reason beyond my understanding, the permissions keep changing back to 755. I downloaded an application upgrade about a half-hour ago after needing to change the mode to 777; just tried to download the latest postgres and the directory was 755 again. What might cause this?
