Thanks. All that makes sense. My setup is to use numbers from 254 on down as my static IP addresses and let the router serve 100 through 149. I used a Netgear router for many years before installing the WRT54G. It only served something like 16 or 32 dynamic addresses starting with 192.168.002. That's when I began the convention of starting at 254 and working down for static addresses. I imagine it will be at least a few years before I need very many addresses. Addressable household appliances are coming -- so they say -- but the plain vanilla ones will have to wear out before I would consider upgrading to a "smart" one. A fridge with a bar code scanner might be handy for keeping track of inventory, but might have a high enough WAF. (I read on the MythTV site that WAF = Wife Acceptance Factor.) Normally I wouldn't assign a static IP address in the range of 100-149 but in this case, since the device has a bug that ignores the setting that it be static and goes looking for a DHCP server I'm assigning it the address the server gave it the first few times it asked. And I'm assuming, based on the very limited traffic on that DHCP server, that it will continue to assign that address whenever the buggy device asks for one. If it doesn't work, then I'll move on to a more capable DHCP server. -- Regards, Dick Steffens _______________________________________________ PLUG mailing list [email protected] http://lists.pdxlinux.org/mailman/listinfo/plug
