I fixed the wireless.  I loaded Meego, release 1.1, on it and edited the 
/etc/rc.sysinit file adding the following line:
ifconfig wlan0 up
before the line:
[ -x /usr/sbin/connmand ] && /usr/sbin/connmand -W nl80211,wext

It is running an ancient kernel, 2.6.35.13-23.1-netbook.
