Ha! Much as I had suspected and why I asked to see it's use in the larger
context as it was indeed a "syntax reference" not an actual command, "&(
... )" that someone saw being used in functional script.

The <( ... ) syntax creates a temporary named pipe which makes the stdout
of thesort | tr commands look and behave like a file, allowing diff to
operate on the expected type of input.
