Try using Yumex (instead of plain yum) to search for "calendar" or
"remind". IMO, Yumex is easier to use for searching. That said,
and given that I was looking for something like this myself, I did
a bit of searching and found a few items you might be interested
in.
* Osmo -- A "personal organizer" (fancy name for calendar
program). This one may be what you're looking for. Set the date
and time for a "task" and it will pop up a notification (with
optional beep) at the time you set. You'll have to set the
"half-hour to go" notification yourself. By default, it has a
fairly large calendar display. However, you can hide it in the
info tray.
* Orage -- Calendar / Reminder program for Xfce. Has a small
calendar (unlike Osmo), but is a bit more awkward to set up.
Unlike Osmo, you can tell it to sound the notification in
advance.
* TkRemind -- GUI front end for Remind. Works reasonably well,
though the Tk GUI isn't as nice looking as the other two. It has
plenty of functionality, though, and could easily serve your
purposes. (For fun, I set up an "Appointment with Darth Vader. Don't
be late." reminder. Pops up every five minutes, and sounds an alarm
SF/X file that I have.)
Anyway, I hope this helps.
