You're not confused - they are using the gateway router, and it is handling the routing to the internet. They need to know when the gateway's ppp0 IP address has changed for reasons unrelated to their routing of data, having to do with a somewhat wierd custom DDNS/IP camera/event-alert thingy. I didn't want to get into explaining all that wierdness tho :-)
