You can try emptying your mail trash and compacting the mail folders. 
Not doing that regularly can slow things up a bit. Also, you "temp" 
directory could use trimming.  Usually located under "/tmp"

After updating, did you restart your Desktop Environment (log out then 
back in, usually.) How t do that depends on with DE/WM and if you are 
using a graphical login.
