Being what it is here's a very simple and basic test you can do.

1. Run the command  "ping 127.0.0.1" from the command line while not
connected to any networks. This will test the NIC, the NIC drivers and the
tcp/.ip stack.

2. If the computer will be using DHCP on the Ethernet interface it's in
your best interest to test DHCP functionality. The modem/router in your
home from your ISP will have a DHCP server running. If there's not extra
ports, just disconnect your wireless router from it and connect the
computer. If Eth0 is configured to get an ip address from DHCP and DHCP
client on the computer is working correctly, the computer should be
allocated an ip address.
