Down to here everything produced the results as expected. The kernel
sees the sound chip and the driver module is loaded.

I selected "All" (F5). The only bar that is muted is the Mic, but I
remember doing that a long time ago, although I can't remember why I
did it. I never use the Mic on this computer anyway. I have the
following bars and values:
Master 55
Headphone 100<>100
PCM 74<>74
Front 100<>100
Surround 100<>100
Center 100
LFE 100
Line 0<>0
CD 74<>74
Mic 0<>0
Mic Boost 0<>0
Mic Boost 0<>0
Phone --------
S/PDIF MM
S/PDIF D 00
Beep 100
Aux MM
Phono 55<>55
Note that I have had to turn the sound down lest I overload the input
on the stereo. That's why the Master is at 55.
I might be better at troubleshooting this if I had more clues about
what all the above abbreviations stand for and what they do.
>Anyway, sorry for the wall 'o text, but I hope it helps.
It helped a lot. At least now I know that the chip itself is working as
it is supposed to. Still a mystery why I'm not getting any output at
the jacks. Later today I'll rustle around the house and try to find an
old pair of standard PC speakers to plug in instead of using the input
to the stereo.
I have been ignoring this computer for a very long time, including
updates to Ubuntu. I suppose I ought to just bite the bullet and wipe
it and then install 12.04 or something.
Thanks for the pointers.
