I found your pointing to usr/share/applications a help.  I copied
terminal to the desktop, edited the properties to invoke the command I
desired, then moved the icon on the desktop to the launcher.  Works,
but needs some cleaning up: icon change, control the launched terminal
behavior and size, etc.  I have yet to try the menu editor.  But this
is progress.
