So you can access the SMB share from all of the hosts but one doesn't require a password and the other do?
Are you sure you have the same level of access to the drive after authenticating? If all of that is true I think he may be correct to say see what differs in the smb.conf file between the hosts. Another idea would be to see what happens when you create a file on the win box from the different clients. See who the windows box thinks the owner/creator of the file is.
