It might be worth trying a new DVD drive. If this Amazon listing is to be believed, ref www.amazon.com/IBM-Geninue-Original-Ultrabay-Thinkpad/dp/B0026M6NNS , a new OEM drive is $32. Otherwise, I might go for a new laptop, or perhaps a refurb T410.
