This is of interest to me, too ... I have Scribus 1.4.0 running on
Mageia 2, KDE4, but I cannot import a pdf, and opening a pdf is less
than satisfactory.

Any hints would be appreciated

In the meantime, I searched Scribus help on "import pdf" and basically
they suggested a number of other packages for editing pdf's including
this snip:
"

  * If you want to edit a PDF that comprises artwork, you can use GIMP
    <toolbox4.html>, Krita <toolbox15.html>, Inkscape <toolbox9.html> or
Libre Office Draw <toolbox18.html>, depending on the content, as all
of them can import PDFs and will let you edit the files.

"

So I tested that suggestion with GIMP (2.8) and that works pretty well,
I think.

Thank you
Regards
Fred James

PS: I used to use xJournal on GNOME with some success.
