Tim,

   You're right: I should have recognized it's origins on the client since I
knew it was invented at Netscape.

   So, it's likely that the server (particularly facebook's) wants
capabilities in js not found in the version installed with Slackware-14.0 or
just does not work with the installed firefox version (which has been
upgraded a couple of times).

   Turns out the problem(s) go away with chrome so she's happy. Ergo, so am
I.
