Next time you open an .xls file (in LO) look at the styles settings
before doing anything else. MS Office uses a style they call "normal"
or something like that. By default all documents have at least the
normal style. Even if the people who created the files did not apply
any styles their data still has the normal style applied. Perhaps your
funny font is lurking in there.
