I installed smartmontoools, and the GUI for it. gsmartcntl. The drive
does not appear in the BIOS, so neither does it appear to
smartmontools.

However I did use it to check the two 320 GB drives, which it reported
as "healthy." It appears that the data available under the Smart tab in
Palimpsest is much more complete.

I had removed the 1 TB drive, so before trying smatmontools and iotools
(thanks, Dale) I plugged it back in. As soon as I plugged in the power
cable it made clicking noises for a minute or so. I assume this means
the head is seeking, and failing to find whatever it is looking for.

Monday I will call Seagate to see if they will still honor the
warranty, considering that it is a refurbished drive that Seagate
sent me to replace the original that also failed. If they will honor
the warranty they will require that I run their diagnostics utility,
which only runs on Windows. I don't have a Windows computer.

I also looked around for replacement drives. Almost half the drives on
the market are Seagate, with Western Digital offering almost as many.
Western Digital also requires their proprietary diagnostic tool, which
also runs only on Windows. There aren't a lot of other brands to choose
from. Newegg offers a few, but Enu and Fry's have only Seagate and
Western Digital.
