I'd like to set up the new entertainment-dedicated computer (just streaming, no games or such) as a Linux machine, sufficient for the task but keeping an eye on cost. So: Any recommendations on where (in the PDX-Salem area) to best look for such a beast?
I don't know all your criteria for success, so this suggestion may be off the mark, but have you considered a Roku box?
http://www.roku.com/For $80-ish plus shipping you'll get HD TV, Netflix, and other streaming apps. I don't think it can do YouTube, nor can it stream from a LAN-shared disk, but otherwise it might do the trick for you.
Roku boxes run MIPS-flavored Linux under the hood, but various web threads suggest that they aren't easy to hack.
