My understanding is that it takes millions of >writes before there's an issue of wearing out the drive. My new laptop has 16 GB RAM, so I didn't set it up with any swap at all. If you have plenty of RAM, why even bother with a swap partition? The new laptop also has a 480 GB SSD, which I set up with a 50 GB partition for /, and all but 20 GB of the remainder for /home, plus a 1 TB hybrid drive, which is just one partition that I may some day use for random data. I'm not very important, so I don't need much space for myself. The computer boots Xubuntu 13.10 in about five seconds to the login screen and another five to fully ready. As for wearing out an SSD, the warranty on my SSD is the same as on the hybrid, which is also what regular hard drive manufacturers offer these days. My guess is that, when it comes to drive longevity, the manufacturers know what they're doing, or at least better than I do. _______________________________________________ PLUG mailing list [email protected] http://lists.pdxlinux.org/mailman/listinfo/plug
