I just upgraded my desktop server/workstation to Slackware-14.1 and discovered that ~/.Xmodmap was apparently ignored when I started X. Rummaging on the Web brought a solution, but while I was looking on my system I discovered that I have both ~/.xmodmap (with commands to invoke the keyboard numeric keys) that I did not know I had and ~/.Xmodmap which is the file referred to in ~/.xinitrc.
Has anyone insight into why there might be two such files? Perhaps one's left from an earlier distribution version, but then it should have been removed during the upgrade.
