It really isn't the generation of LTO that matters, it is the tape
drive hardware. Does your OS support that drive manufacturer and

FreeBSD!
Any hardware suggestions? Big/fast always a plus.
What sort of budget do you have? Do you need a library for hotswapping
tapes? Do you need multiple drives in said library?
I've had really good experience with the Dell PowerVault series (first
a 122T, now a 124T) -- but they cost ca. $3700 with an LTO-6 drive.
The can hold 8 or 16 tapes, which makes mixing daily, weekly, and
monthly tapes a breeze.
Both our PowerVaults have had IBM Ultrium drives, so I'd definitely
recommend that product line. It appears that HP sells a single-unit
Ultrium LTO-6; prices vary by retailer, so do some shopping.
