FWIW, I tried out Ubuntu GNOME 14.04 last night, and with gnome-flashback and some gnome-tweek-tool'ing it became a fairly familiar looking desktop, with Applications and Places in the top bar and a bottom bar with applications. One thing I couldn't immediately fix was horizontal workspaces, it insisted on vertical.
