Dale, I clear the cache when firefox closes; always have. But that does not clear the download history each time a download is completed. I do not clear the history because there are a number of sites I visit daily (news and comics now that I no longer get the newspaper). No, I will not upgrade firefox until Pat and crew provide a patch (as they did a couple of days ago from 24.4 to 24.5) or a new distribution. FWIW, this feature was lost back around version 4 so upgrading to the bleeding edge will not fix it.
